Scholarships, Tuition Exemptions, Honors Student Program

 There are opportunities for privately financed international students studying at Shimonoseki City University to receive several types of scholarships or be eligible for the tuition exemption program to help them concentrate on their studies.  
Students with outstanding academic achievement are recognized as honors students and granted special advantages.

Scholarships (International students)

 Scholarships available to privately financed international students are as described below, and the information is posted on the bulletin board or provided at the International Exchange Center.

Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students (Japan Student Service Organization)

      Undergraduate students   48,000 yen/mo.×12 months (April to March of the following year)
      Graduate students    48,000yen/mo.×12 months (April to March of the following year)
  2. Application period
     Deadline  Early May (Posted mid-April)
  3. Procedure in the university 
      Candidates for recommendation are selected after screening of application forms and academic records, and interviews conducted at the university as deemed appropriate
Shimonoseki City International Student Housing Cost Subsidy (Shimonoseki City)
  1. Amount
     10,000 yen/mo. × 12 months (April to March of the following year)  Paid two times per year
  2. Eligible Applicant
      Privately financed international students residing in Shimonoseki City
  3. Procedure in the university
     Candidates for recommendation are selected after screening of application forms and academic records, and interviews conducted at the university
  4. Application period
     Around July (Notified via the bulletin board)

Tuition Fee Exemption

 This program offers a 50% exemption of tuition fees to privately financed international students with outstanding academic performance who expect to graduate or complete the study program in the minimum period, and whose household income is below the amount stipulated separately.

Required documents
  1. Exemption application (university designated form No.1)
  2. Document proof of family structure (original) 1 copy  *“Notarized document” required for Chinese nationals
  3. Income certificate (original) for the period from January to December of last year     *For all members of the household
  4. Other: You may be asked to submit other documents as required by the Director.
Application method

  Submit the application with the required documents attached to the International Exchange Center in the Shimonoseki City University by the deadline.

Exemption of tuition notification

 For first semester      Notified in writing in early April
 For second semester   Notified in writing early October

Tuition payment deadline

 For first semester       April 26
 For second semester    October 26

*In the event tuition cannot be paid by the date due for financial or other unavoidable reasons, it is possible to apply to pay in installments or to postpone payment. Students must, however, submit an application for the above by the specified deadline. Honors Student Program

 Shimonoseki City University offers the Honors Student Program to two international students in the undergraduate program (excludes special register and special audit students). Honors students are granted with a 50% waiver of their tuition.
