International Student Tutoring Program

 Shimonoseki City University has established the International Student Tutoring Program to support new students from abroad with their studies and lives in Japan.
 International student tutors are just like close friends and family that students from abroad can talk to when they have problems or need help. Tutors help with formalities at the city office, purchasing cell phones and any other matters that require help. Tutors are like reliable consultants to international students.

Main roles of international student tutors

International student tutors have wide-ranging roles in supporting newly enrolled international students.

  1. Direct support of international student’s study and research by, for example, giving advice on preparation for classes and taking classes.
    (The main and most important role of international student tutors is study support.)
  2. Help international students with Japanese study.
  3. Help with daily life.
Support provided by international student tutors
(1)Main supports
  • Consultation on taking classes
  • Support for classes, research, and practical training
  • Support for preparation for and review of seminars
  • Supportive correction of reports and thesis
  • Advice on use of university facilities
  • Japanese language study, conversation in Japanese
  • Explanation of terminology
  • Introduce and explain Japanese culture and social customs
  • Help with shopping just after arriving in Japan and moving in
(2)Support provided as needed
  • Tutors meet international students when they arrive in Japan and see them off when they return to their home countries
  • Support with required administrative procedures and registration in and outside of the university upon arrival
    (alien registration, national health insurance, opening a bank account, purchase of a cell phone, etc.)
  • Support for apartment search
  • Accompany to hospital when ill or injured
